TALLAHASSEE COMMUNITY FRIENDS
OF OLD TIME DANCE

What is Contra?
Contra dancing is an upbeat, beginner-friendly American social dance for all ages. It shares many moves with square dancing and is danced in long lines to live music. Each dance is taught by an instructor ("caller"), who then calls the moves during the dance to guide the dancers. The bands and callers vary each night. For more details, see our How We Dance page.

How It Works

Step-by-Step
Every dance begins with a walk-through. Callers guide each move.

No Partner Needed
Come solo or with friends -- partners may change!

Live Music
String bands set the tempo with reels and jigs that move your feet.
Tips for your first dance
No dance experience is needed. Arrive in time for the Beginner Lesson at 7:15 to get started on the right foot, and by the end of the night, you’ll have danced with everyone in the room! You'll sweat, so wear lightweight, comfortable clothes and flat shoes. Bring a water bottle and a snack if you like. There's a short break mid-way through the night for sharing snacks and socializing. The community is as important as the dancing!
